Mary Lennox in ‘The Secret Garden’

Mary Lennox is a little and weak girl who was born in India. Her parents were rich, but they were not interested in their daughter, Mary. For this reason, Mary was raised by many servants and she couldn’t form a nice personality. We can know this fact from the sentence on page 1, chapter 1 “She was a very selfish, disagreeable, bad-tempered little girl”. After all people except Mary died from an epidemic, she was sent to England where her uncle was living. Before Mary moved to her uncle’s house she was depressed, but after Mary moved to England she would be much more enjoyable. She met her new friends there, and knew about the secret garden. I think it is a great change to Mary to move to England. She finally found her new life there.
Nowadays, many people do not do things that they want or they are interested in. When I read this book, I know the importance of what I really want. I noticed Mary’s noticeable change of her life. The secret garden was a key to change her life. Furthermore, it is a meaningful factor to many characters in this book, Mr. Craven and his son. Also, I was impressed of the interactions between one’s personality and circumstance. Many factors around us can change our life, so they are not ignorable things. I learned many precious things from this book, and I am glad to do it.

Christmas in Sydney

Sydney’s weather reaches the peak of the summer on Christmas day. The temperature goes up very high and the moist weather continues so that many people wear light clothes. In Sydney, most people enjoy the special day with their family at home. They prepare a big meal and spend time eating and having a pleasant chat. There is not so much noise at night from the outside. The day after Christmas is the Boxing Day which is also a public holiday. “On that day, servants receive gifts, known as a Christmas box, from their bosses or employers” (en.wikipedia.org). Many people go shopping on Boxing Day because most shops give a discount. That is why Christmas holiday becomes a shopping season in Sydney. Furthermore, many Christmas events are held in day time so that many families participate in celebrations of Christmas. Sydney’s citizens don’t only give Christmas gifts to their children, they also exchange them with their neighborhoods for blessings.

Christmas Comparison : Seoul and Sydney

Christmas is a special day to both countries, Seoul and Sydney, but there are many differences between them. First of all, a holiday atmosphere is quite contrasting because of the opposite weather. Seoul’s weather is colder than Sydney, so the clothes in Seoul are heavier than those in Sydney. Second, people in Sydney usually spend the Christmas time with their family, but people in Seoul enjoy with their friends. Also, the home Christmas parties in Sydney are more activated than in Seoul. I’ve heard of various kinds of Christmas, but I think the most attractive Christmas to me is in Seoul because I am familiar with it.

Summer Vacation

This summer vacation was very meaningful to me. Before the vacation started, I planned only one thing. That is the ‘being healthy’. Last semester, I had a bad dietary habit. I mainly ate some flour-based food and frequently enjoyed late-night meals. I didn’t do any exercise and made an irregular life. Eventually I gained weight and got skin troubles. Thus, I concentrated in going on a special diet and exercising. I met a personal trainer and trained every day. I didn’t eat any junk food and learned many exercising skills. For two months, my body changed little by little. Also, I have maintained a regular life pattern until now. I think this summer vacation was a turning point of my health.

My Hometown, Busan

I would like to introduce my hometown. I was born in Busan and I’ve lived there for twenty years. I spent most of my lifetime in Busan, so I know well. Busan is the second big city in South Korea. Before, the city was crowded and complicated, but now many people think of Busan as a great resort city. There are many awesome beaches, and they provide us with fantastic views. Also, a lot of restaurants and cultural facilities are famous to citizens. At the end of the year, many festivals and parades are held.
